What are dry eyes?

Dry eyes occur when your eye’s natural lubrication becomes limited. Usually, your eyes are filled with moisture to keep them functioning and comfortable. This lubrication, which is made of water, oil, mucus, and antibodies, can lessen due to a variety of factors, most commonly menopause and aging.

When you have dry eyes, you may experience a range of symptoms. The most common include:

  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Grittiness
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light

In some cases, those with dry eyes may experience excessive tearing or eye-watering.

What causes dry eyes?

A variety of conditions can cause dry eyes. Most often, it’s from decreased tear production, but it may also be from an increase in tear evaporation or an imbalance in the chemical composition of your tears.

These may be the result of the natural aging process but also can be caused by certain medications — particularly antihistamines — or diseases. In some cases, there may be problems with the eyelid making it difficult for the lid to shut fully.

Environmental conditions, such as air conditioning or strong winds, also may cause temporary dry eye

How do you treat dry eyes?

When you see our doctors for dry eyes, they will discuss your treatment options with you. Most often, they recommend over-the-counter rewetting drops or artificial tears. They may also suggest prescription treatments as well.

Your optometrist may also counsel you on lifestyle habits that can improve your dry eyes, including things like:

  • Improving eyelid hygiene
  • Quitting smoking
  • Drinking more water
  • Blinking frequently

If more aggressive treatment is needed, our doctors may suggest prescription medications, like steroid eyedrops, or surgical options such as punctal plugs or dissolving tear implants.

If your eyes feel dry, itchy, and gritty, stop suffering and call the optometrists at Focused Eye Care. Call to schedule your appointment or easily book it online today.
